Modern Nature is a Seattle florist with a contemporary approach, founded and led by floral designer Anna Kishlaly.

Based in Seattle, WA, Modern Nature creates floral designs for homes, businesses, weddings, and events, treating flowers as a design material and a form of artful expression . As a high end florist, we create modern floral arrangements shaped by seasonality, natural movement, sculptural forms, and unexpected botanical details.

Our floral work includes everyday bouquet delivery throughout the Seattle area, flower subscriptions for homes and businesses, wedding flowers and event floral design, as well as floral arrangement classes.

Meet the floral designer behind Modern Nature

I began my floral education in 2020, learning the fundamentals of flower care and design in independent European flower studios. In 2021, I started working at a flower shop, where I learned a lot about customer care and the human side of each order and inquiry.

My name is Anna, I grew up surrounded by open landscapes and private gardens, always observing the changing forms of the natural world. Over time, that connection grew into a desire to follow the artist within and make floral design part of my professional life.  English is my third language, but flowers have always felt like a universal language to me. Floral design has given me a way to continue doing the work I love while building a life in a new country here in the US.

I still keep learning every day. I regularly explore new techniques, mechanics, and approaches to floral design, and collaborate with other florists in the Seattle area to exchange knowledge, share experience, and support one another.

My current areas of particular interest include sustainable floral design and floral mechanics — the technical structures and methods that allow flowers and botanical materials to take shape within a composition while minimizing harm to nature.

Our Approach to Floral Design

Modern Nature is drawn to the changing character of nature — the way flowers grow, move, open, age, and exist alongside other botanical forms such as branches, foliage, grasses, and sometimes even fruits and vegetables.

Our design approach is modern and restrained, balancing clean lines with organic and unexpected forms. We work with a rotating selection of materials shaped by the season, giving each arrangement room to breathe. Negative space, movement, texture, saturation, depth, and contrast are all part of the composition.

We believe in quality over quantity. This principle guides the way we source materials, build arrangements, and work with our customers. We value the growers and the many hands involved in bringing each stem from the ground to the market, to our studio, and finally to the customer.

Seasonality is central to the work. Flowers are chosen for their individual qualities and combined according to what is available and compelling at the time. An arrangement can change significantly even within a single month, with the materials shaping the composition as it develops.

Whenever possible, we work with local growers and support the farming community around us. We seek a wide and unexpected variety of botanical forms, giving the work its sense of abundance, allowing each design to develop its own character and create a sense of discovery for the customer.

Modern Nature’s aesthetic is guided by contemporary European floral design, with close attention to composition, proportion, restraint, and the quality of each material. Modern Nature is an independent, single-designer studio, with Anna personally overseeing each stage of the process — from client interaction and sourcing to design. The process is careful, unhurried, attentive, and evolving.

The process is careful, unhurried, attentive, and evolving. Each arrangement is considered individually, with time given to material selection, composition, and the relationship between the botanicals.

Our Floral Design Studio in Seattle

Modern Nature is based at 918 S Horton St, Unit 929, Seattle, WA, 98134 in the city’s SoDo neighborhood. The studio is the working space behind the floral practice, where flowers and materials are received and processed, orders are prepared, and floral designs are developed and composed.

Modern Nature is not a traditional walk-in flower shop, and the studio is not staffed throughout the day. As a single-designer studio, the workday changes from one day to the next. We may be out sourcing flowers, delivering arrangements, or working on an event setup. For this reason, we don’t offer regular walk-in hours.

If you’d like to pick up an order from the studio, we’re happy to arrange it by request. Just reach out in advance so we can find a time.

The studio also occasionally opens its doors for intimate flower arranging workshops, where participants can work with seasonal flowers and explore different approaches to floral design.

Why Modern Nature

At the center of our floral design studio are the flowers themselves. The modern floral design approach is not defined by volume or abundance for its own sake. A smaller selection of carefully chosen, distinctive stems can have just as much presence when their shape, color, texture, and character are given room to be seen.

Every design is an opportunity to discover something new. There are no fixed florist recipes or combinations repeated from one arrangement to the next. Flowers, varieties, and materials change, and so does the way they are brought together. The result is work that feels individual, unexpected, and connected to the moment in which it was made.

Modern Nature is a small business, independently designed and operated by floral designer Anna Kishlaly. There is a real person behind the flowers — someone directly involved in communication, sourcing, logistics, and design, as well as all the practical details that allow an order or project to come together.

For us, the practical side of the business matters as much as the artistic side. Clear communication, thoughtful planning, reliable logistics, and careful attention to each order are all part of the experience of working with a high end florist. From understanding the purpose and setting of the flowers to considering scale, presentation, and how the finished work will exist within a space, every detail is part of the design.

Choosing Modern Nature means supporting an independent Seattle florist and artist, as well as the wider floral community in Seattle, while keeping a personal connection at the center of the work.
